Will a 65-Inch TV Fit in Your Car?

Standing in the parking lot of Best Buy, Walmart, or Costco with a brand new 65-inch television is a classic retail dilemma.

A standard boxed 65-inch flat-screen TV measures approximately 63 inches (1600 mm) long, 37 inches (950 mm) high, and 7 inches (180 mm) wide.

Before you try to squeeze the box into your vehicle, here is what you need to know.

⚠️ The Golden Rule: Never Transport a TV Flat!

If you are thinking: *"I can just lay the TV flat in my trunk with the seats folded down,"* don't do it.

  • Glass Panel Flex: TV display panels (especially OLEDs) are incredibly thin. When laid flat, road vibrations, bumps, and potholes put flex pressure on the center of the screen, which can easily crack the display glass inside the box.
  • Warranty Void: Many retailers and manufacturers will not cover shipping damage if they discover the box was transported flat.
  • Upright Only: Always transport the television box standing vertically upright and secure it from sliding.

🚗 Will It Fit in a Sedan?

  • Almost Never: A 63-inch long box will not fit across the back seat of a midsize sedan, and it will not fit through the narrow trunk opening of any standard passenger car.
  • Recommendation: If you drive a sedan, arrange for store delivery or borrow an SUV, minivan, or truck.

🚙 Will It Fit in a Crossover or SUV?

To transport a 65-inch TV box vertically in your SUV, your cargo area must meet these clearances:
  • Cargo Length (Seats Down): Must exceed 63 inches (1600 mm).
  • Trunk Opening Height: Must exceed 37 inches (950 mm).
  • Opening Width: Must exceed 7 inches (180 mm).

Most midsize SUVs (like the Toyota Highlander, Ford Explorer, or Jeep Grand Cherokee) and cargo minivans can easily fit the box vertically. Compact crossovers (like the Toyota RAV4 or Honda CR-V) have the length, but you must check the hatch opening height to ensure it can slide in standing upright.
