Will a Queen Mattress Fit in Your SUV or Sedan?

Picking up a mattress from a thrift store, a Craigslist seller, or a retail store can be a challenge.

A standard Queen mattress measures 80 inches (2032 mm) long and 60 inches (1524 mm) wide. The thickness typically ranges from 8 to 18 inches.

Before you load up, let's look at the vehicle requirements and safety rules.

🚗 Will It Fit Inside a Sedan?

  • No: It is physically impossible to load a flat queen mattress inside any passenger sedan.
  • Exception: If you purchased a boxed memory foam mattress (rolled and vacuum-sealed), the box is typically 42" x 18" x 18" and will easily fit in your backseat or trunk with the seats folded.

🚙 Will It Fit Inside an SUV?

  • Most Compact/Midsize SUVs: No. The wheel wells in crossovers like the RAV4, CR-V, or Subaru Outback reduce the interior width to around 40–44 inches. Since a Queen mattress is 60 inches wide, it cannot lie flat on the cargo floor.
  • Tilted Fitment: In some midsize SUVs, you can squeeze the mattress in by angling or tilting it diagonally across the cargo bay. However, this severely limits rear visibility.
  • Large/Full-Size SUVs: SUVs like the Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe, or GMC Yukon XL have the width and length to lie a Queen mattress flat if the seats fold completely flush.

⚠️ Roof Rack Transport: What You Need to Know

If the mattress does not fit inside your SUV, you can transport it on a roof rack if you follow these guidelines: 1. Use Heavy-Duty Straps: Never use simple twine or bungee cords. Use ratchet straps rated for highway speeds. 2. Anchor Front and Back: Tie the front of the mattress to your bumper or towing eye to prevent wind from catching the front edge and flipping the mattress back. 3. Drive Slow: Keep your speeds below 40 mph and avoid highways. Air pressure under a mattress at high speeds can tear crossbars right off the roof.
